In Kuria Community, there is a connection between FGM and poverty. Poverty drives women to allow their girls to undergo FGM so that they are ready to be married off in exchange of dowry that the women use to meet the needs of the other children. Most of the women in this community are widows making them the sole breadwinners in the households.
Imagine this woman living her whole life not knowing her potential would have been in supporting her girl to say NO to FGM and support her to pursue education. HOPE for Girls @ VISA is determined to change the narrative for these women so that they can champion for an end of FGM and early marriage.
